Separate the role from the working conditions

Ask whether the core work is the problem or whether hours, management, unclear expectations or lack of support make it hard to sustain. A move to a similar role in a healthier environment may be worth investigating; a new field with the same conditions may repeat the difficulty. Keep this as a career question, not a diagnosis.

Define a sustainable job in observable terms

Replace vague labels such as “less stressful” with questions about actual hours, staffing, decision boundaries and how priorities change. Ask for a recent example rather than a promise. If a new role cannot meet a firm requirement, treat that as a constraint even if other aspects sound attractive.

HoursWhat happened during the last busy period?Actual overtime and availability expectations
ControlWho can change priorities or deadlines?A recent decision example
SupportWhat happens when workload exceeds capacity?Escalation and staffing practices

Compare small changes before a full pivot

Consider a change of team, employer, schedule or adjacent role alongside a new field. For each, write what condition it would improve, what it might cost and what remains unknown. Speak with people in the target environment and, where possible, try a small part of the work.

Use reflection as one input

WorkClue explores five work preferences through 30 questions and offers a free summary after sign-in. Use it to name conditions you want to investigate, then compare two real options with the free decision matrix. It does not diagnose burnout or provide medical or mental-health advice. If symptoms affect your health or safety, seek support from a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

Should I change careers because I feel burned out?

A quiz cannot decide that. Identify which parts of the work or environment are unsustainable, check whether another team or employer would change them, and compare the costs and conditions of a full pivot.
